It all started with a blank sheet of paper...
One day, a student who regularly goes to Symi where she has a house told us “I miss the taiji quan classes when I am there”. The following week, we were in front of a blank sheet of paper on which we began to write how to get there, what we needed, which hotel to contact... and a date was found for a first internship. The start of a great adventure...
As Eqilibre is not a travel agency, we do not take care of the complete organisation but we put you in contact with our partner, the Opera House hotel and we tell you which flights to book. Once there, apart from the practice of taiji quan and qi gong, you are free to choose your own activities or stay in a group for mountain walks, swimming, relaxing, touring the island in boat, visits and others.
Example of a typical day in Symi:
- 7:30 a.m. breakfast on the terrace
- 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. taiji quan and qi gong, either on the hotel terrace, or at the beach or other shaded place
- walk or taxi-boat to a beach where we have lunch
- swimming, well-deserved rest
- 6:30 p.m. taiji quan, repetition of what we learned in the morning, practice of the form
- 7:30 p.m. it’s time to get ready for dinner in one of the many restaurants on the island
- for those who want it, atmosphere, dance…
These times are flexible depending on the sunshine (we always practice in the shade) and depending on the location selected for the day's practice.
For less sporty people, no worries, most trips can be made by taxi, bus or taxi-boat.
Each afternoon the program varies. During the week there is also a day of rest, you can take the opportunity to tour the island by boat. In the opinion of the participants, it is always a great experience.
The course includes 5 (or 7) days of taiji quan & qi gong.
You have never practiced, no problem, the course is open to beginners unless otherwise indicated.
Symi, where is it?
Symi is a Greek island part of the Dodecanese, in the Aegean Sea, it is located 41 kilometers from Rhodes, or 1h30 by boat (or 50 minutes depending on the boat).
There are only 2,600 inhabitants in Symi, but in high season there can be more than 25,000.

Some testimonies
For those who don't know Symi (with a Y of course :-) It's a small island in the Dodecanese very close to the big Turkey. Well-informed guides speak of: “a unique island with divine charm”
I would say more prosaically that it is good to live there and that we don't have time to bother. The arrival at the port, which is discovered in small steps, the smiley welcome from friends and friends of friends. Everyone knows each other here and Thierry transforms into Symiote as soon as his feet touch the ground and even if his Greek is not very convincing, it is enough to find the shuttle that takes us by winding paths to the new Niriides hotel. Well, it's a little further than the Opera House, and we pray all along the way that we don't encounter a vehicle, which causes precise crossings. But once there, how good is it? Open-air restaurant on small shaded terraces with sea views, spacious rooms and comfortable beaches a few dozen meters from the hotel.
Morning tai ji is done in the shade of the large tree which supports Jean-Joël's favorite hammock, in the afternoon it is on the grass near the bar. In short, this new space adapts to all our desires and the food is delicious at a very reasonable price. In the evening, a short stroll to reach the port, restaurant shopping, new meeting people, relaxing... A real vacation interspersed with very serious nei gong, taiji and qi gong exercises. the energy is so powerful in these places that after a week you feel refreshed and very "song"
Ah yes, another discovery, the Costa hotel (you can't make this up :-) in Rhodes welcomes us a few steps from the port and a great restaurant populated with affectionate cats...

My week in Symi in July 2015 turned out to be an unforgettable experience: a dynamic group who benefited from a VIP welcome in an enchanting setting, without forgetting Thierry's fair and patient teaching. Participating in this internship constitutes an essential step in learning the practice. Looking forward to the next course.

Internships in Symi? Magic !
It's simple, close your eyes and imagine yourself on a beach facing the deep blue Aegean Sea,
the sun and just a gentle breeze to practice taiji.
After the lesson take your mask, snorkel and fins and dive to the bottom of the sea to look for sea urchins.
With Prévert under your arm, go for a walk “On foot, on horseback, in a car, and in a sailing boat”.
This course combines pleasure with pleasure. The classes are professional while remaining relaxed, of public utility to perfect your taiji.
The courses in Symi are 100% energy, 100% Qi, in fact we should rename the island to Qimi.

I really liked Symi. Magical week of training because the place is magnificent... Three hours of taiji every morning, discoveries of the island on the program every afternoon, on foot, by boat, by motorbike, by bus, by taxi. ... because our course supervisor knows every corner of the island and shared his favorites with us with great sympathy and relaxation.
I will return there with joy.

Symi is simply WOW!
A week of taiji on a beautiful island. Sometimes on the hotel terrace with a breathtaking view of the colorful houses spread out on the hills above the port. Sometimes on a magnificent beach at the edge of crystal clear, turquoise water.
The Grand Master, as he is nicknamed, transmits his knowledge and passion to us in a relaxed, almost playful way. Be careful, he always remains very professional even on vacation!
It is also an opportunity to meet new practitioners from other leisure clubs. This is what creates the dynamic of a very friendly group in a more than friendly atmosphere.
Thank you for this great experience, I have exceptional memories of it!

Five good reasons not to miss the meeting in Symi:
1) to do your taiji in the morning on the large terrace surrounded by small colorful houses, very close or further away (it feels like a summer Christmas Nativity scene)
2) to explore its karst landscapes, both arid and captivating, with Homeric reminiscences
3) to dive and swim in a sea of unforgettable tones decorated by very intimate micro-beaches - absolute happiness
4) to discover the island by scooter or tour it by boat, and breathe the intoxicating scent of its wild herbs with that of the sea
5) to enjoy the balanced mix of old and new, locals and tourists, spontaneous and commercial - what a luxury.
Lorella, Brussels
Take the time to stop time to live in the present moment, savor it, taste it, share it, hold on to it a little longer to better enjoy it. Slowly soak up the energy of taiji under the watchful but caring eye of Thierry, and finish little by little, at times, by feeling it from the inside out and experiencing it for good. Then, between two taiji sessions (4 hours a day, that's not nothing!), perfect the art of idleness, the art of doing nothing but doing it well: reading a book upside down, splashing around in the sea without any specific aim, admiring the breathtaking views between the ears of a curious goat who came to wander near my deck chair, enjoying a small dish washed down with retsina, chatting endlessly, getting to know the Symiotes and, the height of delight for me, put on my walking sandals to walk the surrounding hills, balancing on the stone.
The return is a bit hard obviously, but my little suitcase winks at me to tell me that, only x number of times to sleep, and I'm leaving again.... Thank you Thierry :)
